HR has always been an important role in an organization but it has also changed over the years based on current workplace and technological trends. We know that 2020 is a very unusual year because of Coronavirus. Most workplaces have been dramatically affected in one way or another. Many HR teams have had to learn to manage newly remote employees and increase their use of direct deposit for payments.

Top tips to succeed as an HR manager in 2020

Be flexible:

Flexibility is a great trait to have as an employee in normal times, but with the Coronavirus pandemic it’s become vital. Even as the economy reopens in Hawaii, there will be safety precautions and allowances needed to keep employees and customers safe. Be understanding about employee frustrations or fears and try to be as flexible as possible in providing solutions.

Understand the modern HR role:

In 2020, HR managers are seen as strategic partners; they should be working with the business owner to understand the company vision and execute business plan goals. A great HR manager will work to grow revenue by increasing productivity through employee engagement, building a talent pool to hire the best talent, nurturing innovation and creating a collaborative culture that encourages everyone to share their ideas.

Identify a vision:

Exceptional HR managers identify a vision for the organization they work for and then create a plan to bring it to life. A vision might be to hire a multi-cultural team that benefits from the experiences of their international teammates. The plan could be to hire as many people from diverse cultures as possible then share special holidays celebrated by each team member and encourage cultural foods at company potlucks.

Learn to be a great communicator:

HR managers should be able to comfortably stand up in front of top management and employees and communicate their vision along with the steps being taken to bring it to life. The HR team will also want to be able to talk about employee incentives and how the HR department is contributing to the company goals.

Celebrate your employees:

Hire a diverse range of people who contribute to company goals and work to foster an inclusive environment. Celebrate birthdays and work anniversaries; and acknowledge holidays celebrated by all team members. Creating an inclusive culture and making employees feel valued goes a long way to keeping employees engaged, which is critical for long-term productivity.

Embrace technology:

HR functions have been improved dramatically with HR software. If your HR office hasn’t moved into the 21st century with HR end-to-end software, it’s time to make the move. All important HR tasks can now be handled through software. For example, online reporting tools for tasks like payroll reporting and benefits enrollment dramatically increase efficiency.
