Entrepreneurs are innovative and creative by nature but studies show that these traits are stifled when they don’t know how to manage tension and set healthy boundaries. One of the most important skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur is to learn how to manage the stress and pressure that comes with starting and growing a business. If an entrepreneur lets stress take over their day, employees lose an effective leader and the entrepreneur loses productive hours growing the business.
Top 5 strategies for dealing with the stress and pressures of being an entrepreneur
These strategies are tools that entrepreneurs can work into their daily or weekly actions and routines to help them be the best they can be for themselves, their employees and their businesses.
Take time to exercise
Not everyone is motivated to go to the gym or become a runner but everyone should be able to make some time to exercise doing an activity that brings them pleasure. Figure out what time of day works best for you; it could be first thing in the morning, at lunch or after work. Getting moving brings oxygen to the body and gets people away from their phones, computers and workload; even if it’s for 10 minutes a day. Some ideas include kickboxing, yoga, weight lifting, Barre classes, dance classes, swimming, walking or running.
Take a break before bedtime
Working right up until bedtime makes it much harder to fall asleep and to sleep peacefully, especially if you’re using a screen to work. Setting a clear boundary to stop working and spend at least one hour relaxing and unwinding before bed is the healthiest thing you can do to get a restful night sleep which is so important for managing stress.
Before you wrap up for the day, add any unfinished tasks to your to-do list so you know they will be handled. Set online calendar reminders that will pop up to remind you to take care of important tasks by a deadline. Stay on top of your inbox; after an email has been handled, delete it or save it in an appropriate folder. An overloaded inbox can create stress!
Set aside a day for your “life”
Working seven days a week makes it very hard to handle things like grocery shopping, laundry, and tidying your house. It also makes it hard to do leisure activities or to spend time with friends and family. Choose a day (or at least half a day) that’s for you and stick to it every week.
Find a mentor or group for support
Most people aren’t entrepreneurs and have no idea about the pressures you face. Finding a mentor or a group of entrepreneurs who can help support you in your business endeavor is a great way to keep your spirits up and to get some great ideas to help you grow your business.
Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a day, week and month and if possible, assign some tasks to employees, contractors, outside experts or your business partner(s) to help ease your load. It’s important to know your strengths but also to recognize where it makes sense to outsource for expertise in areas such as HR and accounting.
Not an HR expert? That’s okay; we’ve got you covered through HR outsourcing! When you partner with Makai HR you can get on with the business you are trying to grow while we take care of your employee needs from 401(k) plans to payroll, taxes, health insurance/benefits, and worker’s compensation.
